Troop Training Overview:

The Troop supports many different types of training for the Boy Scouts and for the Adult Leaders.

Boy Scout Training - fits into the following main categories:

- Rank Advancement Training - Mostly hands on learning with Scoutmasters & older scouts
   - Example: Teaching of the Tenderfoot rank requirements (See Boy Scout Handbook & New Scout Pages)
   - Frequency: continual (meetings, campouts, events) and on demand

- Merit Badge Training - Typically a mix of individual learning, some hands on requirements & adult coaching/guidance & evaluation
   - Example: Personal Fitness Merit Badge requirements (See Merit Badge Books/Pamphlets or Online)
   - Frequency: On demand (Troop Counselors), Plus 3 Advancement days /Yr & Camp Geronimo 

- Youth Leadership Training - Leadership training, on the job patrol roles training, PLC
   - Example: Junior Leader Training Class / Campout Roles
   - Frequency: Usually twice /Yr after the Youth Leadership Elections (Apr/Oct)

- Activity Specific Training - Training Developed by the BSA on individual scouting topics
   - Example: 
   - Frequency: On demand/online or as arranged by BSA District/Council

- Safety Specific Training - Swim Guidelines & Tests, Safety Reviews, Emergency Training
    - Example: CPR Training, White-Water Rafting Safety Training
  
 - Frequency: Usually CPR/Swim Safety prior to Camp Geronimo / as needed

Adult Training - fits into the following categories:

- Basic Training for All Adults - Training all adults involved in Troop Activities should take:
   - Examples: Youth Protection Training, Fast Start Training
   - Frequency:
Both are available at any time online, may occasionally be scheduled as a class

- Scoutmaster / Assistant Training - Training for direct Adult Scout leaders
   - Examples:  New Leader Essentials, Wood Badge Training
   - Frequency:
Some is online some is occasional - Local & National BSA scheduled

- Troop Committee Training - Training specific to the Troop Committee charter / roles
   - Examples: Troop Committee Challenge, BSA Policies
   - Frequency: Mostly available online, group sessions typically annually with new committee members

- Role Specific Training - Training targeted to various specific volunteer roles
   - Example: Merit Badge Counselor Orientation, Outdoor Event Leader Training
   - Frequency: This area is new - still needs to be established (but at least annually)

- Safety Specific Training - Swim Guidelines & Tests, Safety Reviews, Emergency Training
    - The safety training provided for Boy Scouts is equally applicable to Adults
    - Example: CPR Training, White-Water Rafting Safety Training
  
 - Frequency: Usually CPR/Swim Safety prior to Camp Geronimo, reviews as needed

- Detailed Adult Training Requirements Per Role

Training Scheduling:

Since these are just categories and there are many courses in each of these areas it is not easy to say exactly how to schedule into all of these classes. However the Troop does provide/encourage attendance at some of these. Contact the Training Coordinator or the appropriate owner for specific areas on the Troop committee / other leaders  for more details.
