Troop 278 Fundraising Types & Purposes Primary Purposes for Troop Fundraising: 1) Fund Ongoing Troop Operations: - Merit badges, advancement badges, neckerchiefs - Storage space, materials, website expenses - Expenses for Scout-O-Rama, basic equipment maintenance
- Build/maintain sufficient funds
for pre-payment deposits (e.g. Geronimo/Philmont etc) 2) Goal Specific Fundraising - Troop fundraising for a specific goal - e.g. selected equipment can be safety related, general Troop related or activity program related
- Individual Scout Fundraising to
pay for specific high expense programs (e.g. Philmont) 3) Scout's Personal Fundraising for their own Scout account: - Opportunity for Scouts to pay for a portion of their scouting experience themselves - Troop accrued allocation that can be used to pay for Scouting program expenses Scouts benefit in their Scout account for all the above fundraising activities with 50% or more of the fundraiser profits split amongst the participating Scouts. 4) Service Hours (Fundraising) - Scouts can earn service hours that are required for rank advancements by supporting fundraising for others Eagle Scout Service Projects. - The Troop may also occasionally support other community organization's fundraising efforts from which we get no financial benefit. These can also count as service hours. The Troop provides many opportunities for fundraising, however, fundraising is only one part of the Scouting experience and needs to be balanced with the other aspects of the program (skill building, advancement, leadership). Participation in most of our Troop fundraising efforts is therefore optional. Expected Participation Basic Troop operations are funded primarily by our Fall Fundraiser / Scout-O-Rama ticket sales. Every Scout benefits from Troop operations as they receive awards and participate in Troop activities. Therefore, every Scout is expected to participate in this fundraiser.
Goal specific fundraising has
included Christmas tree pickups to support Philmont crews and may include new or
special Troop wide equipment acquisition/ replacement. Scout Personal Financial Responsibility Many families want their Scouts to fund part of their Scouting experience themselves. This may be for family financial reasons or, quite often, the family’s interest in having their Scout feel more ownership for the Scouting experience by paying part of their own way. All our fundraisers can support reaching these financial goals.
Troop Fundraising Decisions There is a constant flow of new fundraising ideas and suggestions. While it is important that we revisit our fundraising activities, this should be considered on an annual basis to coincide with the Troop budget activity. This ensures that sufficient funds will be available to support the major purposes described above, and that sufficient individual Scout fundraising opportunities exist.
