Wet Beaver Creek 2007 Overnight Backpacking Trip Sat Oct. 20th - Sun Oct 21st Trip Leaders: Mr. Moore (with Mr. Saba, Mr. Kofron & Mr. Maerling) Post Trip Report: 14 Scouts & 4 Adults hiked to Wet Beaver Creek this year. This was a new hike for all but 2 Scouts and all but 1 adult... new frontiers. Wet Beaver Creek is a year round creek in the Beaver Creek wilderness area near Sedona. The weather was excellent for us with a warm - but not too warm - sunny day to hike in. Our faster group went ahead and were able to get the best campsite near the creek & weir. All the Scouts had fun in the creek below the weir - a great little red rock shelf & nice riparian area. Sitting across the weir the Scout were able to raise the pool water level by at least 3 inches! We all hiked upstream to a truly great swimming hole another 1-1½ miles upstream. Fresh deep water, red rock towering all around, and plenty of places to scramble, climb & swim. One of the classic southwestern desert swimming holes. Everyone had fun here swimming in the bracingly cold water (amazing how going numb reduces the complaints...). In the evening we had a wide variety of food being prepared from the basic to full gourmet! - including several different steak dinners! The evening was quite a bit warmer than expected (nice) and we were ('eventually...') able to have a small fire with smores - and all to bed by about 9pm. Sunday was another fine day - not so cold overnight or in the morning... another small fire for warming (and coffee) and some more interesting breakfast variety - we packed up & broke camp by a leisurely 9:30am. The hike out was easy, downhill. We added one new backpacker to the Troop 278 roster (Nate). We also stopped for a fast food lunch at Cottonwood on our way home and were back in Phoenix for 1:30pm at our departure point - right on schedule. Another successful Troop 278 backpack trip! Mr. Moore. Original Pre-Trip Summary This is an approx 3.5 mile each way overnight backpacking trip to the Wet Beaver Creek Wilderness area just east of I17 near the Sedona turn-off. At our campsite location there is a creek with a weir, rope swing and several more great swimming holes upstream. Cooler weather, red rock, water holes & great scenery all round. Suitable for all levels of backpackers - (a much easier hike than Fossil Springs). See the Flyer for details |
