Weekday (Evening) Training: Supplemental Short Training Hikes Leader: Mr. Link /Mr. Moore 15 Hike Options: short, accessible, good elevation gain, mostly out & back for flexibility (can shorten and/or stagger starts & still meet en-route) Ordered by trailhead location (W->E) 1) Telegraph Pass up to the saddle, and on up to the shelter/beyond or add in a bit of National Trail to the east from the saddle as an alternate. There is also a ridgeline section to the west about ½ mile after the shelter as an alternate path. 2) Park at the North end of Altadena school. Hike up the wash just north east of the School on Desert Foothills Dr. When you reach the Desert Classic Tr. Follow the unmarked 'Power Line Tr.' that follows the power lines NNW towards South Mountain. Follow this trail (which becomes a little indistinct at the top) all the way to the Gila Valley Lookout (parking lot) below the antennas on TV road. 3) Park at the North end of Altadena school. Hike up the wash just north east of the School on Desert Foothills Dr to access Desert Classic tr. going East. After about 0.5 mile – climb up the steep rocky section then at the T turn right on an access trail up the steep hill. At the T at the top the helicopter pad is to your right. left at the T a disused road leads to the Goat Tr. - a ridgeline trail to the East. After about 2 miles this trail loops north back to Desert Classic Tr. 4) From the turnabout TH at end of E. Rock Wren Dr (N of Ray nr. school bridge) go north on a steep trail to the top – you can also add on a section west down into the wash & back. 5) Next to Canyon Dr - (opposite the Fountain on Ray) go North to the South Mountain Park sign - go east & at the T junction go north to the Saddle (intersects Goat Tr.) & back (or return via the west loop at the T) 6) Start at the North end of S 32nd St (access North from Ray on S. 33rd St). From the turnout at the end go right of the last house and follow the Tr. uphill. At the saddle go left along ridgeline. Trail becomes indistinct - return the same way - or search out a return loop just to the north that goes eastwards towards Warpaint drive T-H... When you re-intersect the main trail climb back to the saddle to the south west & return. 7) From Warpaint drive - go west on the south loop off D-C (as for CdL) but stay left at the T & continue up the hill to the west & over down to the road & back (elevation) or along the ridgeline trail which loops back to the same trail slightly to the north. 8) From Water Tank nr. end of Equestrian/Kachina, go West on Desert Classic and take the North access loop for Corona De Loma Tr.. follow the trail down to the right into a tight rocky canyon and then stay to the North of the main trail up a wash - the trail switchbacks up steeply to join the National Tr. East of Buena Vista Trailhead - return the same way or you can loop back on the Corona de Loma Tr. 9) From Water Tank nr. end of Equestrian/Kachina, go east on Desert Classic, then where the trail turns abruptly in an acute angled turn (after about 1 mile) - take the initially indistinct trail up the canyon northwards from this point. This climbs (unrelentingly) upward to an intersection with Guadalupe Ridgeline Tr. If you have any energy left you can consider going east on Guadalupe Ridgeline Tr. past a rocky area on the ridgeline to the next southbound spur (0.5 miles) and return on this trail back to Desert Classic returning to the West. 10) The same hike above (9) can be started from the empty lot on the north side of Kachina Dr. East of the Water Tank. Access SMP and head directly North towards the wash - this reduces hiking time to get to the elevation part of the hike. 11) From the W end of E Desert Star/S 40th Place climb the West side of the hill right near the trailhead with the transmission lines on top (go east a short way on Desert Classic Tr. to access). Follow the ridge trail all the way to the top where it intersects the Guadalupe Ridgeline Tr. Return the same way or take Guadalupe Ridgeline Tr: You can go east dropping into Beverly Canyon - turn south on Beverly Canyon Tr. and link back to Desert Classic - go West back to the trail head. Or for a longer loop go west on the Guadalupe Ridgeline Tr. climbing past a rocky area and staying on the ridgeline through an indistinct section - the trail re-emerges and after about 0.5 miles a T junction gives you a south bound Trail back to Desert Classic - return eastbound to the Trailhead (this is approximately the reverse of the loop described in 9) 12) From the W. end of E. Desert Star/S. 40th Place take D-C east to Beverly Canyon Tr. and over the saddle go W on Guadalupe Ridgeline Tr. stay on the ridge until a large rock formation block the trail at this point circle it to the north & drop down to the old shelters via a side trail – return the same way or loop back on Pima Canyon Rd & Beverly Canyon Tr. 13) From the W. end of E. Desert Star/S. 40th Place take D-C east to Beverly Canyon Tr. and over the saddle go E on Guadalupe Ridgeline Tr. towards Pima Canyon TH (can loop back on Desert Classic direct or via Pima Canyon Rd & Beverly Canyon Tr. South. 14) From Pima Canyon TH follow Marcos de Niza Rock signed trail up and onto the Guadalupe Ridgeline Tr. along the ridge to Beverly Canyon Trail - or all the way to the old shelters at the 'roads' end (see hike11). Return via Pima Canyon Rd or climb back up to Guadalupe Ridgeline Tr. to return - or take the first south access trail to return on Desert Classic (see hikes 9 & 11 for how). 15) From Pima Canyon TH take the Ridgeline trail to the old shelters at the end of the 'road' and back, (can add some extra distance on the various N-W Pima loops or return on Guadalupe Ridgeline Tr. or on the Desert Classic via Beverly Canyon Tr. or the South Guadalupe Ridgeline access trail). Note 'Guadalupe Ridgeline Tr'. is not a named trail - but at Pima Canyon TH a trail is marked with a sign to the 'Marcos de Niza' Rock. This turns into the Gualalupe Ridgeline Trail above Marcos De Niza Rock. This ridgeline trail crosses Beverly Canyon Tr. at the saddle South of Pima Canyon Rd. and runs all the way West along the Guadalupe Range ridge to access both the lower & upper ends of Hidden Valley.
