Rogers Canyon Overnight Backpack Trip: February 24th - 25th 2007 Trip Leader: Mr. Saba 12 Scouts and 4 adult leaders headed into the rugged wilderness of the Superstition Mountains to conquer Rogers Canyon starting from the Woodbury Trailhead. The combination of a 5.2 mile hike plus a 1,600+ foot elevation gain made for quite a workout!! The group camped in Angel Basin, a magnificent site surrounded by steep canyons on all sides. Once camp was set up, we quickly set out to explore some well-preserved cliff dwellings. These dwellings were occupied by the Salado around A.D. 1300. A wonderful Saturday evening around the campfire was followed by a very cold (25 degree) Sunday morning! Even with the cold, the scouts had little trouble getting a good night sleep (but Mr. Kofron’s zero degree bag still needs to be replaced)!! The hike out was just as spectacular with clear views of Four Peaks and Mount Lemmon (yes, all the way to Tucson). Other than a few scratches, the crew came thru with no injuries and a great feeling of having completed such a demanding hike!! Mr. Saba. |
