Flagstaff - San Francisco Peaks & Lava Tubes June 2007:

June 15th - 17th 2007

Trip Leader: Mr. McCollum

Post Trip Summary:

Approximately 13 Scouts and 8 adults attended this 3 day campout.

Most of the group met at Burger King at 5:00 pm on Friday to head to Flagstaff. At Burger King we organized drivers, permission slips and all the gear and set off about 5:40pm. predictably the traffic was slow getting out of town... We regrouped at the rest stop near Flagstaff (closed!) and on to our campsite just off AZ 180 west of Flagstaff. Fortunately the Kults had gone ahead and saved our group a spot to camp at. We set up our tents in the dark and some stayed up to play cards till late.

An early start Saturday with Alex, Chris, Kevin, Kevin, Riley, Jim, Li An, and Patrick hiking the Humphries Trail ~8.5 miles round trip with ~3270 feet elevation gain. This whole crew made it to the highest point in Arizona! - the peak of Mt. Humphries at 12,633 feet.

Meanwhile the other crew got a later start to AZ Snowbowl taking the chair lift to the top of  Mt. Agassiz (with viiew of Mt. Humphries) and hiked around the top for awhile. Later in the afternoon many also hiked Red Mountain (and really liked it!).

Both groups met up back at camp to prepare patrol dinners which by all accounts were very good. The weather was beautiful all day and not too cool in the evening.

Sunday breakfast was a leisurely affair and very filling. Another very fine day - we broke camp and headed off to hike through the nearby Lava Tubes. Everyone enjoyed it very much. An uneventful and less busy trip home. Another successful Troop 278 outing - thanks Mr McCollum!
