Hiking Trips on Phoenix South Mountain A Series of Hikes in November - January (see below) Trip Leader: Mr. Moore These hikes are offered to support rank advancement and Camping/Hiking Merit Badge requirement - and also as a fun local outing. These hikes will take you on South Mountain trails that do not appear on any maps. Suitable for all hikers - some sections of the hikes are challenging with approximately 1000' or more of elevation gain. However we will be going at a steady pace. Good training is to climb Telegraph pass & on up to the shelter - we will go higher than this... Families are most welcome to attend - (with parent supervision for all non-scout children) Dates: Saturday November 24th - Thanksgiving Weekend 8:00am start - Out & Back hike ~7 miles total from the Desert Foothills Dr. Trailhead telegraph pass to National Trail east to the very top of Goat Hill. This hike can also easily be shortened by returning early. Telegraph saddle & back is approx 4 miles. Update - Only 3 attended this family out & back hike - we
hiked as planned pleasant weather and very light wind. 180 degree views from the
Telegraph Pass saddle north to Phoenix & South to the Ahwatukee Foothills. We
continued up to the old shelter. - Round trip hike ~7.5 mile from Warpaint Dr. trailhead via Corona de Loma trail to Eagle Valley, the Chinese Wall, Buena Vista Trailhead and back on an alternate route. This hike can be shortened if you wish by returning early back the same way as the outbound leg. Update - 6 attended this family loop hike - we hiked as planned with perfect clear weather and very light wind. The views from the top were great with 270 degree views over Phoenix the east valley and south over Ahwatukee. We hiked up to just below the antennas in elevation! and returned on a different (and hidden) challengingly steep trail. Everyone had fun! Saturday January 26th 7:30am start Round trip hike ~10 mile from the watertank where Kachina Dr. & Equestrian Tr. meet. We'll hike on Desert Classic & unmarked trails up to above Eagle Valley and then on the National Trail to Fat Mans Pass, through Hidden Valley to the Tunnel & link up to the last section of the Marcos De Niza trail, returning back down the mountain on an alternate picturesque route to the East of the watertank. If you'd like to discover more of South Mountain and see some of the best sights - this is a great way to discover it! If you need a 10 mile hike for your Hiking Merit Badge this meets that requirement - we will also satisfy the 1000 foot elevation requirement of the Camping Merit Badge.
