Highline Tr. Backpack to Horton Springs April 2006:

Trip Leader: Mr Chadwick

Dates: Saturday April 15th - Sunday April 16th

Number of Scouts Attending:  ~12 + ~6 adults

Summary:

This was an alternative to the Fast Start Campout for the older more experienced Scouts.

This hike follows part of the Highline Trail under the Mogollon Rim in central Arizona near Payson.

Hiked for about 7 miles from Christopher Creek to camp at Horton Springs

A tough hike with lots of accumulated elevation change up & down (~1700 feet) but not much net change.

As we were hiking we met many double marathon runners coming the other way. the first of these that ran by us were about 50 miles into their race and had been running for 5 hours! We continued to see runners for the next 4 hours - all the way to Horton Springs. It was hard to feel bad about our hiking conditions when you see what these folks had done!

On the way we met a previous Scoutmaster of Troop 278 manning a water re-supply station for the Marathon runners. Mr Barr was with us and had a very good chat with this gentleman!

On Sunday we hiked out about 3.5 miles down the Horton Springs Trail and shuttled drivers back to the cars at Christopher Creek and had lunch at the day use area.
