Fossil Springs Overnight Backpack: September 19th & 20th 2009 Trip Leader: Mr. Rausch This is a favorite Troop 278 destination that we visit most years. Its about 3.5 miles and 1400 feet down to the Springs and you will regret carrying anything back out that you didn't need - Pack Light! This is a suitable trip for a first time backpacking experience for new Scouts - however it will be strenuous... correct equipment will be required and young Scouts should keep weight to a minimum (target 25lbs). Especially first time backpackers - check what you need with an adult leader! We will also conduct swim tests for all new Scouts. See the Troop Overnight Backpack Packing List. All parents are welcome. We will visit the springs with rope swing, the old dam area, the 'more-cool-pool' lower waterfall & channel, the water cave & the 'fish tank' again this year (several of these were new 2006 discoveries). Approximately 72 degrees fresh water year-round and very refreshing this hot time of year.
There will be an opportunity to participate in a
service project (arranged by REI) at the springs - this is optional - if you
need service hours in general or specifically to complete the Philmont 50
Miler award sevice reqirement this can help! Please pre-register with REI
Note that REI has a Free "Introduction to
Backpacking" training/discussion session to be held 9/9/2009 6:30 PM at
the Tempe Store. Obviously they hope to sell you something - but no
obligation - and their advice is first rate. Note the troop has some
backpacks you can borrow suitable for this trip - contact
Mr. Hudson Any questions on required
equipment - contact Mr Moore or any of the assistant scoutmasters and
consult the
troop overnight backpacking checklist
