Philmont Trek 2007:

Saturday July 21st - Thursday Aug 2nd

"Crew '07 -The Fellowship of the Horn"

Crew Members: Alex, Brian, Bryan (chaplain), Chris, JJ (leader), Kevin, Riley & Robby.
Crew Advisors: Mr. Baker, Mr. Hawkins, Mr. Link & Mr. Moore

...Back in 1907 at 6:00am on Aug 1st  Robert Baden-Powell sounded an African Kudu horn to open the 1st ever Boy Scout camp on Brownsea Island in southern England.

Our Philmont '07 crew carried our real Kudu horn throughout the trek and blew it every day to signal our arrival and departure from camps on our way. Our main goal was to blow this horn on the exact hour of the 100th anniversary of the first Boy Scout camp. Everyone we met was fascinated with the horn and the story. Most were not familiar with it - only a handful already knew of the significance of it & the 100th anniversary of Scouting.

Whole crew at the saddle (11,000 ft) above Copper Park camp (Mt. Baldy behind). On the all day long climb up to the saddle, one by one, we passed all 5 crews that left before us - all that rigorous training paid off !

Our trek was a great success... everyone had a lot of fun and worked well as a team..

Our theme and timing helped make our trek quite unique. We were just lucky to be at Philmont at this special time.

This 1st Boy Scout camp was also being Re-enacted on Brownsea Island at the time of the 21st World Scout Jamboree in London.

So allowing for the transatlantic time difference -

We sounded the Kudu horn at 11pm on July 31st at Ponil our last Philmont trail camp - exactly 100 years to the minute form when Baden-Powell did....

On Aug 1st (Aug 2nd in England!) Philmont staff also held a 100 year anniversary ceremony at base camp where Chris sounded the Kudu horn once again in front of all the hundreds of Scouts at base camp that night.

Earlier in our trek on Saturday 28th we also climbed Mount Baldy - the highest peak in Philmont - we climbed it in the dark to arrive on the peak to sound the Kudu horn to welcome sunrise over Philmont. Our whole crew made it to the top!

First glimpse of sunrise from the top of Mt. Baldy 12,441 feet - 5:45am.
-
we set out at 3:30am and climbed 2000 feet in the dark to see this!

Sounding the Kudu horn atop Mt. Baldy.

We also had the good fortune to be traveling with a Crew from Tennessee - Troop 20 from Nashville who were on the same Trek. We became quite friendly with them - (advisors & Scouts) as on the course of our our trek we met up at most camps. We Invited the Tennessee crew to join us in sounding the Kudu horn throughout our trip and especially at our campfire on the 31st.
