Fossil Springs
– Day Hike
Saturday
May 9th
This is a day hike to a favorite
Troop278 location. This is an approximately 3.5 mile hike down to
Fossil Springs where we will swim &
explore the changes after the flow restoration work over the fall. We can also
check out the camping situation now the area is reopened. We will spend the day
around the springs etc and will hike back out the same way in the late
afternoon. Fossil Springs has year round 72 degree fresh water, swimming holes,
rope swings, waterfalls & great scenery. The elevation gain is approximately
1400’ from the springs to the trailhead (meets the camping merit badge hiking
requirement).
See
attached flyer for more details.

Activity Report:
A crew of 10 scouts and 5 adults day hiked down to Fossil Springs to check out
the restoration work on the dam, flume & road by APS prior to our planned
September backpacking trip.
We had an easy hike down to the springs - odd not to be carrying down a lot of
weight (!) The springs were not too busy this time. The camping locatons are
unchanged (an important part of our scouting trip) and the upper springs are
mostly unchanged too - though a few big trees have gone..
Down at the dam things are now a lot different with the whole top half of the
dam removed. Lots of trees are gone above the dam and several have fallen down
into the flow below the dam. Water now cascades across the full width of the dam
but the water level below is much lower than before. Down below at the water
cave things are much the same except for some channel blockage swapping the
primary flow. All evidence of the flume is totally gone and the flume road
itself is all dug up for revegetation.
Our hike out was quite challenging after a long day of hiking down & water
play...But another successful Troop 278 trip
