Clifton Arizona & Morenci Mine Nov 2006:

Trip Leader: Mr Baker (with Mr Saba & Mr Kofron)

Dates: Friday November 10th - Sunday November 12th

Number of Scouts & adults attending: approx 14 Scouts & 8 adults

Summary:

Long trip to Clifton Arizona (near Safford). We set out Friday midday and arrived in Clifton in time for Tacos at the local "hole-in-the-wall" taco shop - great tacos though! We got to camp after a 6 mile drive on unpaved roads and set up in the dark - no problems for this crew...

We camped right above the creek, cool night as the wind came up - so we retired early... Next day we went rock hunting and found some great specimens!, then we hiked up amongst some old mine workings and visited the remains of a house above the mine site. Then back to camp for a quick lunch and then off to Clifton to take the Morenci Mine tour. Here we met up with some of the crew who could not leave until Sat am.

Morenci is the biggest open pit copper mine in the USA - its huge and we got to see and climb on one of the giant ore trucks as well as tour the electro-plating facility...

This night was warmer and we enjoyed a nice dinner and camp fire... we practiced knots for the upcoming knot challenge and solved some devilishly tough riddles!

Sunday we broke camp and split up some with  some 'rock-hounds' back at the great rock face we explored Saturday and some hiking along Limestone canyon - looking for Geodes and other goodies amongst the small mine workings... not too many finds!
